After Benchmark led the team to update The Competencies for Performance and Learning Professionals in 2016, the Institute for Performance and Learning (I4PL) asked us to update the certification exam questions.
I4PL members who wish to be recognized as a CTP (Certified Training Professional) or CTDP (Certified Training and Development Professional) must pass the exam as part of the certification process.
In creating 200 new multiple-choice questions, our goal was to ensure they accurately reflected the knowledge, skill, and experience required to be a certified professional in the performance and learning industry.
In partnership with the Institute, we agreed on the breakdown of questions by competency area and question type. Then, we wrote comprehension and application-level questions that require both a thorough understanding of the Competencies and related work experience in order to be answered correctly.
To ensure the questions were high quality, comprehensive, and valid, we solicited input from external reviewers and piloted the exam with a small group. We then revised the questions based on quantitative data from the pilot.
The new exam was launched in August 2017. In March 2018, we reviewed a larger sample of exam data from testers over the six months to reconfirm the validity of the questions.
